“The Gods Visited Me in Science Class”

Phobos was the first.

He twirled around and I let him in.

But his presence made the room stifling hot

So I pulled my sweater off my bare arm

and heard a gasp from a girl behind

As if she'd seen something

Wrong with me

Ugly about me

Aedos came next

He painted my face a cherry red

And we feasted on thoughts as heavy as storm clouds

Until I was drenched in insecurity

Why could mother not have made me dazzling?

not scrawny and bleak?

but mother did give me a brain

And constellations do align sometimes

Athena turned my lock for a quick coffee

And reminded me of my locks of black hair atop.

The rain was settling.

I pulled my ponytail out of its tie and let it cloak me

It deafened my ears, blinded my eyes,

but I didn't mind

For Paregoros was great visitor

Athena, always a pleasure

But I prayed Aphrodite would join them.
